Located on the 45th parallel, Traverse City is home to vintners who grow grapes and bottle wines on the scenic Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsulas. The wines are fast becoming among the finest offered nationally and internationally. The ideal climate, with vineyards protected by winter snows and conditions moderated by proximity to Lake Michigan, has given rise to a wine industry that has been recognized for its quality and variety since the first winery opened here in 1974. Notable for Rieslings, methode champenoise sparkling wines, Chardonnays and fruit wines, Traverse City area vintners are now also receiving high praise from critics and consumers alike for their red wines, Pinot Noirs, ice wines and other varieties.
Visitors can enjoy days of touring and tastings at beautiful wineries located on some of the most breathtaking sites in the area. Our wineries are located on two beautiful peninsulas extending north from Traverse City - the Leelanau Peninsula and the Old Mission Peninsula.

ACME, Mich., August 5, 2008 -- Grand Traverse Resort & Spa near Traverse city, Michigan has become pet-friendly with the addition of its newest facility dubbed The Dog House-The Ultimate Dog Retreat.
The facility is an actual house located on the Resorts grounds that was converted for use as a place of recreation and rest for pet dogs while their owners stay at the Resort, plus limited day care for dogs is also available.
Were pleased to offer this newest amenity to our guests. As Michigans premier resort experience, we understand how important family time is to our guests, and pets are definitely part of the family, said Grant Channing, the Resorts Executive Vice President & General Manager.
The Dog House-The Ultimate Dog Retreat is designed with a social environment for dogs, so they can play together in three separate play/slumber rooms or in the grassy fenced yard. Each room has special rubberized flooring that is easy on the paws, and each room has immediate access to an outdoor potty area. Plenty of toys to entertain and delight are provided, as are cozy beds for dogs to rest and sleep. Filtered water is readily available in all rooms and in the yard. The staff provides walks, plenty of potty-breaks, and lots of TLC.
A social and health pre-screening process ensures the safety and security of all dogs in the cage-free environment of The Dog House-The Ultimate Dog Retreat. In addition, guests have access to visit their pet anytime during their stay, because the facility is staffed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Owners also may take their pets out for a day-trip or outing, and then return them to the facility.
Owners are required to bring their own food from home, plus any medications for their dog, but no toys or beds from home, which can cause possessiveness. All dogs must be spayed or neutered, be at least 6-months old, have all current vaccinations including Bordatella, and must have a topical flea preventative.
For complete information about reserving a place for your dog at The Dog House-The Ultimate Dog Retreat, call 231-534-6765, or send an e-mail message to dogcare@gtresort.com.

June 6, 2008 " Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, located in Acme, has earned Green Lodging Michigan (GLM) Leader certification from the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG).
Green Lodging Michigan (GLM) encourages hotels, resorts, motels, and bed & breakfast facilities to implement environmental initiatives and cost-saving green practices to conserve energy, reduce water consumption, protect air quality, reduce waste, and participate in environmentally preferred purchasing.
"This accreditation is the mark of environmental responsibility of hoteliers who are committed to green business practices that make environmental and economic goals their top priority, said DLEG Director Keith W. Cooley. Green Lodging Michigan is also helping to ensure the viability of our lodging facilities and the thousands of jobs related to Michigans hospitality industry."
Grand Traverse Resort & Spa has implemented many environmental initiatives at their facility. They offer a linen and towel reuse program to guests enjoying extended stays and also have a comprehensive recycling program available to both guests and staff. Grand Traverse Resort & Spa also recently had an on-site energy audit conducted to help discover ways to improve energy efficiency and cut utility use.
The Golf & Grounds Department has been at the forefront of the Resorts environmental efforts. In 2006, the Resort was certified as a Steward by the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program in recognition of many environmentally-sound maintenance practices throughout the Resorts golf courses and grounds, and last year, the Resorts Golf & Grounds Department retrofit several pieces of diesel maintenance equipment with catalytic converters, an innovation in the business.
Commenting on the importance eco-friendly operations, Grant Channing, executive vice president and general manager of the 600-room, 900-acre resort said, We understand the impact that a facility of our size can have on the environment, and the need to minimize that impact for the good of our guests, our employees and our community.
Every employee is aware of the importance of reducing, reusing, recycling, and conserving. Those practices have become standard operating procedure resort-wide. We truly appreciate recognition of our efforts by Green Lodging Michigan, but that is not an end, only a step along the way, he said.
Green Lodging Michigan is a joint effort between DLEG and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to encourage the lodging industry to conserve and protect the state's natural resources while increasing marketability and lowering utility costs.
"Green Lodging Michigan has been an effective way of including hoteliers in the effort to help Michigan continue as the leader in environmental beauty and abundant natural resources," said Steven E. Chester, director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
Green Lodging Michigan is a voluntary and non-regulatory certification program offered through the Michigan Energy Office in DLEG to hoteliers at no charge. The Michigan Energy Office and the DEQ provide technical assistance to those who are interested in implementing green strategies and earning certification. The GLM program certifies facilities based on environmental initiatives such as air quality, energy efficiency, solid waste reduction, toxic waste management, water conservation, purchasing and communication. There are three levels of certification: Partner, Steward, and Leader, which can be earned by completing a self-assessment checklist and achieving a minimum number of requirements and points.
The Michigan Energy Office promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy resource development to Michigan's residents, businesses, and public institutions. For more information about the Green Lodging Michigan program and to download the GLM application packet and self-assessment checklist, visit the website at www.michigan.gov/greenlodging.
