Community Outreach Programme Invites Guests to Give Back

Rose Hall, Jamaica, May 2009 - Half Moon, the luxury resort located in the exclusive Rose Hall enclave, is inviting groups to go Beyond the Beach as a part of its community outreach programme.

Beyond the Beach encourages interested groups to join the Half Moon team in giving back to local communities whether through donating time, goods or money to local programmes.
"We have a longstanding history of quiet activism in our community. Our team leaders and team players take pride in going out into the community to help clean up schools, conduct skills training workshops, mentorship programmes and working in children's homes and hospitals. Often times some of our guests ask to be included," said Richard Whitfield, Half Moon's Managing Director.

Recognizing the increasing requests from incentive groups, corporate clients and families, the 400-acre luxury resort's management team formalized the programme for guests to get involved.

Through the Beyond the Beach programme Half Moon will facilitate groups who wish to participate in any local charity programme, whether by direct involvement or donation of cash or kind. "We are simply facilitators to help persons make their contribution to the local community," said Director of Sales and Marketing, Myrtle Dwyer. The luxury resort will help organize group outings, assist customs clearance for in-kind donations and open the doors to introduce guests to local charitable organizations.

Half Moon currently partners with the Barrett Town All-Age and the SOS Children's Village both in Barrett Town, a community in the Rose Hall area. The resort also works with the Granville Girls' Home in Trelawny and the Salvation Army Western Jamaica Division. "Groups are not limited to these programmes," Ms. Dwyer said. "Through our connections we can facilitate programme groups or individual guests wish to participate in, whether it's reading to children at a children's home, bringing supplies for local schools or helping to build a home at a children's village." she continued.

Rose Hall, Jamaica (September 2008) - Myrtle Dwyer, Director of Sales & Marketing at Half Moon announces the appointment of Sharon Logan as the luxury resort's Associate Director of Group Sales.

Mrs. Logan assumes this new appointment after serving two years as the resort's Tour Operator Relations Manager. In her capacity as Associate Director of Group Sales, Mrs. Logan will be responsible for building the resort's strong group business, canvassing key international markets and forging alliances among the meetings, incentives, conventions and events constituencies.

Sharon holds certificate in hospitality marketing from Connell University and held positions at Sand Castles and Plantation Inn.

Half Moon Green Globe Certified

Further to this, Half Moon, the 400 acre luxury resort located in the elite enclave of Rose Hall, is Green Globe certified.

Long a pioneer in green initiatives in Jamaica, the resort was commended for its detailed, concise and sound environmental practices and social responsibility that are at the heart of the 400 acre resort's operation.

Half Moon has over the years integrated various green practices and initiatives in its operations. Among such initiatives are: a towel re-use program - old beach towels are used to make wash rags for cleaning; old linen are sent to the upholstery shop to make play items for the Anancy Children's Village; shredded papers are used as packing materials for guest when transporting craft items, and they are also sold to funeral homes to be used in the stuffing of caskets. Saw dust from the furniture shop is sent to the equestrian centre to be used as horse bedding while, horse dung is used as soil conditions in the nursery. Old batteries are sent to a battery dealer, waste oil is sent to a factory to be used in the manufacturing of poultry feed and waste auto oil is used in the manufacturing of bio-diesel. Guests of the resort are also afforded the opportunity to contribute to these programs through various conservation signs such as water, electricity and chemical usage.

One of Jamaica's premier luxury resorts, approximately ninety percent of Half Moon's food products are purchased from local providers. With its on-site nursery, carpentry and furniture shop as well as upholstery and drapery centre, Half Moon is able to employ skilled artisans from the local community. Additionally, waste materials from these areas are used in the on-site horse stables, in landscaping and to produce dolls for local children's homes. Similarly waste resources from the stables are used in the resort's landscaping programme.

A staunch conservationist, the 54 year old resort reported a five percent decrease in its energy bill thanks to several conservation initiatives effected resort-wide that included replacing high wattage light bulbs with low-energy bulbs. Additionally, the resort's waste water treatment plant generates over 130,000 gallons of water per day that is used to irrigate the 400-acre property.

The resort's eco-friendly operations practices are underscored by its community outreach programme that is supported equally by management and staff. For group guests, Half Moon facilitates volunteerism programmes allowing group participants to contribute to local charitable organizations either by donations or through hands-on work.

"We are thrilled to receive this mark of distinction as it represents the commitment of our board of directors and management to employ sound environmental practices. More importantly, it represents the commitment of the staff to implement and drive the small measures, enforce the larger policies and practices and to go out amongst the community to infect these positive practices that are good for all of us, "said Richard Whitfield, Managing Director.

Green Globe is the worldwide benchmarking and certification program that facilitates sustainable travel and tourism for consumers, companies and communities. It is based on Agenda 21 and principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 governments at the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992.

Half Moon is a luxury resort situated on twin crescent-shaped white sand beach, with 398 rooms including suites, cottages and villas.
